Term 02 · Madder red

Kökboya

Europe called it Turkey red.

A red pulled from the roots of a plant and fixed so it would not wash out. Europe could not copy how it was done until Greek dyers brought the process to Marseille around 1745.

    A revival, then a pause

In 1981, Harald Böhmer and Marmara University started DOBAG, bringing natural dyes back to village carpet weaving around Ayvacık and Yuntdağ. A later Marmara University study reports production there has almost stopped.
